I am concerned about nerve pain between my toes

Surgical treatment

Morton’s neuroma is an enlarged nerve between the third and fourth toes (or occasionally, between the second and third toes) which can cause pain. Surgery to remove the neuroma can be performed and is successful in 80% of cases. Since a nerve is removed, there is permanent numbness at the tips of, or between, one or two toes afterwards, but this is not usually a problem, this will not affect function and you will become less aware of it with time.

Can I expect any complications from this surgery?

There may be persistent pain due to irritation at the cut end of the nerve; this is called a stump neuroma. This can require surgery to be repeated but occasionally, the pain is permanent. Infection is another possible complication as with any operation. The foot is prone to post-operative swelling and bleeding and these can also lead to infection. An adequate period of rest and elevation of the foot is needed after the surgery to prevent this complication. Bruising is possible but should reduce quite quickly.
